At Floodbase, we are dedicated to transforming how communities and businesses manage the growing risks associated with climate change and flooding. Our platform provides a unique solution that allows public sector organizations and insurers to design, monitor, and underwrite parametric flood insurance products. By leveraging nearly ten years of peer-reviewed science, we are able to provide coverage to areas and risks that were previously considered uninsurable. We are proud to be backed by investors like Lowercarbon Capital and Collaborative Fund, while working alongside partners such as NASA, Google, the UN, and FEMA.
What is this role?
We are looking for a Senior Insurance Structuring Data Scientist to join our technology team on a full-time, hybrid basis. This position is a key part of our effort to maintain our platform as the industry standard for parametric flood insurance. You will report directly to our Chief Product and Strategy Officer and will work from our offices in either Brooklyn, NY, or Boston, MA. In this role, you will define the principles that guide how we structure parametric flood policies, using your deep technical and scientific expertise to minimize basis risk and expand the reach of our insurance solutions.
What will you do?
- Create parametric flood insurance structures that help our reinsurance partners price submissions efficiently, which includes presenting payout structures to carriers and balancing the needs of all stakeholders.
- Build repeatable pricing models for new insurance programs, ensuring that these models gain acceptance from the carriers providing capacity and supporting our commercial team during client interactions.
- Advance our ability to estimate flood risk by conducting statistical analysis on flood frequency, developing new methodologies for damage estimation, and applying these insights to support businesses and governments.
What makes you a great fit?
To succeed in this role, you should have a strong background in statistical inference, particularly when working with complex dynamical systems and extreme value distributions. We value candidates who are comfortable with exploratory data analysis and data visualization, ideally using Python or R. You should be a proactive problem solver who is comfortable navigating the ambiguity of a growing market. We are looking for someone who can communicate effectively with diverse groups, ranging from software engineers and machine learning scientists to senior leadership and external partners. A bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field like Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, or Data Science is required, and a graduate degree is considered a plus. Experience in the risk transfer domain, specifically with natural catastrophe perils, is highly desirable.
What's in it for you?
We offer a collaborative environment where you can make a tangible impact on climate resilience. Our benefits include:
- Hybrid work flexibility to support a healthy work-life balance.
- The opportunity to work with cutting-edge climate data and industry-leading technology.
- A role that directly influences the future of global parametric insurance markets.
