The mining industry is facing a significant challenge. Finding new ore deposits has become increasingly difficult and expensive, yet the world is more dependent than ever on metals like copper, lithium, and nickel to power the transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles. At KoBold Metals, we are changing the status quo. We combine the expertise of world-class geologists with advanced AI models and proprietary sensors to identify the next generation of mineral deposits. In just six years, we have grown into the largest independent mineral exploration company and a leader in exploration technology. We are backed by a diverse group of investors, including T. Rowe Price, Andreessen Horowitz, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and we are looking for a talented leader to join our mission as an Infrastructure and Security Engineering Manager.
The opportunity
Our success relies on the deep collaboration between human expertise and machine intelligence. As our Infrastructure and Security Engineering Manager, you will sit at the foundation of this partnership. You will report directly to the VP of Technology and take ownership of the systems that allow our geologists and data scientists to work effectively across the globe. You will lead the team responsible for our AWS cloud environment, IT operations, and our robust cybersecurity posture, ensuring that our infrastructure is not only secure but also highly efficient and scalable.
A day in the life
- You will lead a team of 5 to 10 engineers, providing mentorship and fostering a culture of accountability while managing the day-to-day project cadence and long-term technical planning.
- You will design and implement the underlying infrastructure for distributed parallel machine learning and scientific computing, ensuring our data systems can handle large volumes of complex geoscience information.
- You will collaborate closely with scientists and engineers to build interdisciplinary relationships, ensuring our technical solutions are perfectly tailored to the unique computational needs of our exploration programs.
Who you are
You are a seasoned leader with a passion for building secure, high-performance systems in a multidisciplinary environment. You thrive when you can bridge the gap between complex technical requirements and the practical needs of the business. Your background includes:
- At least 5 years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity.
- At least 2 years of experience in a management role, leading technical teams.
- Expertise in Python and hands-on experience deploying systems on AWS, GCP, or Azure using infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
- Proficiency with Kubernetes and GitOps workflows, as well as experience managing monitoring and alerting systems.
- A proven ability to communicate complex security and technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, such as geologists and business personnel.
- Fluency in English and the ability to work effectively in a remote, global setting.
Why you'll love it here
We offer a competitive base salary range of $190,000 to $230,000 for this full-time position. Beyond the compensation, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the most important resource challenges of our time while enjoying the flexibility of a remote work environment. You will be part of a mission-driven team that values intellectual rigor, curiosity, and the ability to solve problems that truly matter to the future of the planet.
