At The Baltimore Banner, we are on a mission to reimagine the future of local news by building a sustainable, trustworthy, and vibrant digital newsroom. We believe that high-quality journalism is essential to a healthy community, and our work focuses on holding institutions accountable while telling the stories that define the Baltimore metro area. We are looking for a visionary leader to help us scale our analytics maturity, ensuring that data-informed insights guide our newsroom and business decisions as we continue to grow.
The role
We are seeking an experienced executive to serve as our Head of Data Analytics and Insights. This is a full-time, on-site position based in the United States. You will act as a player-coach, working directly with your team to build backend infrastructure while simultaneously crafting the high-level reports and dashboards that drive our organization forward. This role is ideal for a strategic thinker who is comfortable balancing technical oversight with executive leadership.
Core responsibilities
- Lead and grow our analytics capabilities by mentoring team members and fostering a company-wide culture of data-informed decision making.
- Develop and execute an analytics strategy that supports both our business goals and newsroom objectives through effective KPI development and cross-functional collaboration.
- Oversee the evolution of our data infrastructure, including the management of ETL processes, data governance initiatives, and the selection of tools to ensure self-serve access for stakeholders.
Skills and experience
To succeed in this role, you should bring at least 10 years of experience in analytics, ideally within digital media, journalism, or e-commerce. We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field like Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or Computer Science, with a master’s degree preferred.
- Deep technical fluency in data warehousing, SQL, and Python, alongside experience with tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, Looker, and Google Analytics.
- A proven track record of driving insights that improve customer acquisition, engagement, and retention.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex analytical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with data governance, security, and quality standards.
Compensation and benefits
The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $190,000, and the role is eligible for a corporate performance bonus. We are committed to providing a fair and competitive compensation package. Our benefits include:
- Flexible working hours and paid time off.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- A 401k retirement plan with a company match.
- Commuter benefits and an employee assistance program.
- Access to wellness programs designed to support your physical and mental health.
How to apply
If you are passionate about the power of local journalism and have the leadership experience to help us build a data-driven future, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your application to join our team and help us continue to serve the Baltimore community.
