Engineering Manager, Platform at Knock

At Knock, we are on a mission to transform how products communicate with their users. We believe that thoughtful notifications are essential for helping users find value in the software they use daily. We are a remote-first, Series A startup with a team of over 20 people, backed by prominent investors and industry leaders. We are deeply committed to the API-first movement, and we are currently looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our platform team on a full-time basis. This is our first dedicated engineering management hire, offering a unique opportunity to shape our infrastructure and team culture while reporting directly to our CTO.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale our platform team by hiring 2 to 4 additional engineers over the next year who balance technical craft with pragmatic problem-solving.
• Own the roadmap and prioritization for our platform services, ensuring we balance reliability, scalability, and developer experience with the need for feature delivery.
• Lead incident response and operational maturity by debugging production issues, conducting postmortems, and driving long-term reliability improvements.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience as an engineering manager, specifically leading platform or infrastructure teams within startup or mid-sized environments.
• A proven track record of hiring, mentoring, and retaining high-performing engineers while fostering an inclusive and equitable team culture.
• Deep technical expertise to oversee core services, paired with the judgment to delegate effectively and step in only when necessary to unblock the team.
• Strong experience managing on-call rotations and maintaining high-availability services.
• Excellent communication skills, with a preference for long-form documentation and the ability to thrive in a distributed, remote-first setting.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, such as Cursor or Claude Code, to help accelerate workflows and experimentation.
