As an Engineering Manager on the Database Sources team, you will push forward Airbyte’s mission-critical source connectors that extract customer data from databases, data warehouses, and ERP systems. These are our largest revenue driving segment of connectors. This role isn't just about oversight; it's about deep technical exploration and leadership.
You will guide your team in diving into various databases to understand their specific approaches to optimized queries, write-ahead logging, and information schema management. Leveraging these insights, your team will develop efficient data extraction methods and implement Change Data Capture (CDC). You will play a key role in shaping the frameworks and strategies that make Airbyte's database sources reputable at scale and the undisputed industry leaders. Finally, you will help to build the tools to empower our community to create and extend databases on their own.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage the Database Sources team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence.
- Provide technical leadership to pioneer new patterns, tools, and frameworks for connector development.
- Mentor and develop engineers, helping them grow their technical expertise and career paths.
- Oversee the design, delivery, and maintenance of high-quality, high-volume, enterprise sources for Airbyte.
- Drive the strategic vision for database connectors and shape the team roadmap to align with company goals.
- Oversee the planning and execution of database connector projects ensuring milestones are delivered on time by coordinating with cross-functional teams. Manage project timelines, resources, and risks to achieve successful outcomes.
- Build leverage: a week-long task this year should take ten minutes next year. Advocate for continuous improvement in engineering processes, documentation, and team practices.
What You'll Need
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in a leadership or management role.
- Strong technical background in Java and advanced SQL.
- Expert knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases (e.g. Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB)
- Proven ability with data warehousing extraction solutions and methodologies
- Strong understanding of database replication and partitioning strategies
- Experience in profiling and optimizing high performance applications
- Advanced knowledge of Change Data Capture (CDC) techniques
- Proven track record of managing and scaling high-performing engineering teams.
- Ability to provide thought leadership and drive alignment across teams and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- You have an insatiable desire to ship.

Location
- San Francisco. Onsite 3x/week.
Salary
- $220,000- $245,000 + a generous equity package, and benefits listed above for US Market. For countries outside of the US we offer benefits and localized salaries based on your region or area.
