Engineering Manager Core Library at Ditto Job Board

About the position

Ditto aims to expand the internet beyond traditional reach. Our groundbreaking edge sync platform is powered by peer-to-peer database technology that runs on mobile, web, IoT, and server systems, enabling devices to sync data in real-time even without the internet.

Your role is to lead our team of core library engineers. The Core Library team at Ditto is responsible for building the cross-platform Rust library that forms the basis of SDKs and is embedded directly into our cloud components. This team sits right at the heart of everything we do, and plays a major role in technologies that span the entire Ditto product.

Ditto is rapidly growing. Today, while the team is small, there is an opportunity for hands-on contributions, but your role should be considered a pure people management role in the near future.

As the Engineering Manager, you will:

• Lead and magnify the impact of a team of 3-7 skilled individual contributors, responsible for ensuring their success, aiding their career growth, and facilitating their technical work.
• Plan and deliver high-quality engineering solutions that align with the business needs and objectives.
• Work with product and design to build the roadmap for the team; this will involve talking to engineers, other teams, customers, and partners.
• Contribute to the architecture and product specification for features, and then help ensure your team of engineers are successful in the implementation & delivery of these features.
• Estimate the delivery timeline for projects and communicate with upper management and the broader team regarding project execution.
• Set team culture by example, expanding Ditto’s culture of Trust, Communication, and Continual Improvement.
• Set and maintain high standards of engineering practices & quality.
• Mentor, coach, and advocate for your team members.

What you'll need:

• 2+ years of experience managing teams of software engineers. This includes people-management responsibilities such as hiring, performance and growth management, and career development.
• 2+ years of technical leadership, including driving best practices, project scoping and design, and providing architectural guidance
• Fluency in the Rust programming language.
• Experience developing features for libraries while maintaining API backwards compatibility.
• Strong communication skills, particularly written communication skills. As a fully distributed team, async communication is the norm and the development process often includes written architecture and design documents.

Nice to haves:

• Experience managing a remote, globally distributed team.
• Experience in architect or other Staff+ roles. 
• Fluency in other programming languages for which Ditto publishes a native SDK (e.g., C++, Kotlin/Java, Swift, JavaScript, or C#).
• Experience working with mobile SDKs (iOS, Android, etc).
• Experience working with FFIs or unsafe/unmanaged native code.
• Experience working with build systems, in particular but not limited to Cargo (e.g. Nix, Bazel, CMake, etc.).
• Experience with distributed tracing, metrics, telemetry, etc. - with a particular focus on the Rust tracing ecosystem, OpenTelemetry, and interoperability between the two.
