We are Sourcegraph, the company behind the world’s most powerful code intelligence platform. Our Code Search, Deep Search, and MCP products enable developers and AI agents to navigate, understand, and operate on massive, complex codebases with speed and confidence. Leading technology teams at Stripe, Uber, and Dropbox rely on Sourcegraph to ship faster and with higher quality. Backed by a16z, Sequoia, and Redpoint, we operate as a globally distributed team that values high agency, direct communication, and a deep commitment to the craft of software development.
Key outcomes
- Lead the Code Plane team, which builds the execution layer and agent interfaces that allow developers and AI agents to take meaningful action on code at enterprise scale.
- Own the team’s roadmap and weekly execution across Batch Changes, Executors, the Sourcegraph MCP Server, Code Monitors, Code Insights, and the src CLI, ensuring work is scoped, sequenced, and delivered on time.
- Spend up to 50 percent of your time contributing as an individual engineer while providing hands-on technical guidance on architecture, code quality, and product trade-offs.
- Establish and maintain team practices for planning, code review, decision-making, and on-call that enable consistent, high-quality output in an async-first, globally distributed environment.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Customer Engineering, and adjacent engineering teams to translate customer feedback into shipped features that serve both human developers and coding agents.
- Manage the full performance cycle for a small team of engineers, including hiring, onboarding, feedback, career development, and addressing under-performance when necessary.
- Build a clear point of view on how AI models and agents succeed or fail in real workflows, and use that perspective to shape product decisions and long-term technical strategy.
Requirements
- Three or more years of experience managing a team of professional software engineers, including running the full performance cycle of hiring, onboarding, feedback, career growth, and performance management.
- A strong individual-contributor background at a senior level, with the ability to provide technical guidance on architecture, code quality, and trade-offs and to write high-quality code when needed.
- Proven experience leading teams that ship end-user product features, ideally in developer tools, agent or AI products, command-line interfaces, or other technical product surfaces.
- Experience partnering with Product and Design to move features from idea through shipped product while incorporating customer feedback into the roadmap.
- Direct customer-facing experience, including discovery calls, design partnerships, and building feedback loops into planning.
- Hands-on experience shipping products consumed by or built for AI agents, such as MCP servers, agent SDKs, agentic developer tooling, or agent-friendly CLIs.
- Practical experience using and reasoning about coding agents such as Amp, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools, with clear opinions on effective human-agent workflows.
- Strong async-first communication skills and experience working successfully in a globally distributed remote team.
- Professional fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with the technologies used by the Code Plane team, including Go, TypeScript or React, GraphQL APIs, PostgreSQL, Docker, and Kubernetes in a multi-service environment.
- Experience building developer tools, code intelligence platforms, code search products, or large-scale code transformation and refactoring solutions.
- Background in monitoring, alerting, or “signals over code” products such as security scanners, lint platforms, or code-quality tools.
- Experience designing and shipping command-line interfaces that serve both human users and automated agents effectively.
Compensation
We offer a competitive base salary that targets the high end of the market range. For this role the target compensation is $192,000 USD base in Zone 2 and $144,000 USD base in Zone 3. In addition to cash compensation, we provide equity and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, a learning and professional-development budget, flexible and asynchronous work practices, and remote-work support.
