Role at a glance
We are seeking an Engineering Director, Backend to join our team in a full-time, on-site capacity. This is a director-level position for an experienced leader who is ready to guide our backend engineering efforts. You will be based in our Chelsea office, working closely with our team to scale our proprietary banking core and deliver high-impact financial products.
Your impact
- Lead and mentor an engineering team, taking full ownership of their professional growth and the successful delivery of key features and product enhancements.
- Drive the end-to-end roadmap for critical business initiatives, guiding everything from initial product discovery and complex system design to final launch.
- Maintain a hands-on approach by contributing to backend services written in Java, setting the standard for engineering excellence through active code reviews and technical architecture oversight.
What you'll need
- At least 9 years of professional software engineering experience, with a minimum of 3 years in leadership roles.
- Proven experience scaling teams and systems within high-growth, product-focused startups, ideally those with 100 to 300 employees.
- A strong technical background in Java, cloud services, and system design.
- Familiarity with advanced technical domains such as machine learning, stream processing, and large-scale data-intensive applications.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to bridge the gap between engineering teams, product managers, and executive leadership.
- A deep sense of empathy for your team, our users, and the broader business goals.
- Fluency in English.
