The Opportunity
We are searching for a Director of Engineering to lead the technical evolution of our high-traffic e-commerce platform, spanning web and mobile experiences. This role demands a unique combination of strategic leadership and a genuine love for engineering. You'll be responsible for defining and executing the technical roadmap, nurturing a talented team, and, when needed, rolling up your sleeves to contribute directly through POC development or hands-on problem-solving. Your passion for technology will be the driving force behind our platform's scalability, performance, and continuous innovation.
What You’ll Be Doing
Strategic & Technical Leadership:
- Develop and execute the engineering roadmap, aligning with business objectives and product strategies for our e-commerce platform (web and mobile)
- Own and deeply understand the platform's architecture and technology stack, ensuring its scalability, performance, and security
- Drive technical excellence through code reviews, architecture decisions, and adherence to best practices
- Proactively manage technical debt and ensure scalable, maintainable code
- Lead the implementation of cutting-edge technologies, including AI-assisted e-commerce solutions
- Stay abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies, applying them to enhance the platform
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
- Lead a hybrid team of 20 engineers (frontend, backend, QA) across Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance
- Provide mentorship and guidance to engineering team members, fostering their professional growth and development
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, UX/UI, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Ensure seamless integration of new features and enhancements
- Foster strong communication and collaboration between engineering and cross-functional teams
- Implement and maintain Agile methodologies
Platform Operations & Excellence:
- Ensure the platform's performance, scalability, and security
- Implement rigorous testing processes and observability metrics to maintain high standards of quality
- Optimise the platform for high traffic and performance
- Ensure the security and integrity of customer data
- Champion digital best practices across website, mobile app, email, content management, and asset management

Role location
We believe that building connections and collaborating as Pet Circlers is super important. So this role is based in Sydney with a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week in our pet friendly offices (your pet might love coming to the office even more than you). This could change in line with business requirements.
