Director of Platform Engineering at OakNorth

OakNorth is a profitable financial institution dedicated to supporting the growth of entrepreneurs through a modern standard of business lending. We are currently redefining the future of banking by developing next-generation financial tools and products. We are looking for a Director of Platform Engineering to join our team and help us build upon our success. In this role, you will lead a team of eight engineers across our UK and India offices, shaping the technological foundation that powers our services while ensuring our infrastructure meets the highest standards of performance, security, and compliance.

Key outcomes

• Provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the platform engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.
• Define and execute a platform strategy that aligns with our business objectives and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the architectural design of our platform infrastructure to address the unique challenges of the banking industry.
• Collaborate with product management, security, and compliance teams to prioritize features and deliver high-quality solutions.
• Ensure all platform solutions adhere to data protection regulations and financial industry standards.
• Drive operational resilience by maintaining system reliability and enhancing disaster recovery capabilities.
• Establish data-driven quality standards, including automated testing and robust observability systems.
• Optimize development processes and methodologies through continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

We are seeking a leader who resonates with the you build it, you run it philosophy and enjoys enabling teams to work in a self-service manner. You should have extensive experience in engineering leadership and a strong grasp of modern cloud-native practices. Our environment relies heavily on automation to ensure our infrastructure remains robust as we modernize legacy components.

Our current technology stack includes:

• Languages and Frameworks: TypeScript, React, Python.
• Data and Storage: PostgreSQL, BigQuery, MySQL.
• Testing and Automation: Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, pytest.
• Infrastructure and DevOps: AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, GitHub, CircleCI.

You must be fluent in English and be prepared to work in a hybrid capacity within the United Kingdom.
