We are looking for a visionary Director of Mechanical Engineering to join our team in Santa Cruz, California. Our company is currently transforming the world of boardsports and transportation through the development of innovative light electric vehicles. We need a hands-on leader who is passionate about creating high-quality products and guiding an interdisciplinary team through the entire development lifecycle, from initial concept to final market delivery.
Key outcomes
- Direct the development of new light electric vehicle products, overseeing the process from conceptual design and prototyping through to new product introduction.
- Validate and refine existing mechanical and electromechanical systems through rigorous testing and iteration.
- Coordinate with both domestic and international vendors to manage component sourcing, manufacturing quotes, and quality assurance protocols.
- Collaborate closely with our electrical engineering team to ensure the seamless integration of wire harnesses, connectors, and PCBAs.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation and prepare detailed drawing packages for internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee resource allocation and task management to ensure all project milestones are met on schedule.
- Mentor, hire, and grow our engineering team members to foster a high-performance culture.
Requirements
- A Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Between 7 and 15 years of professional experience in the field.
- Proven experience managing mechanical engineering teams ranging from 2 to 20 people.
- Advanced proficiency in CAD software, specifically Solidworks.
- Extensive hands-on experience with prototyping and machine shop environments.
- Strong background in design for manufacturing, including familiarity with injection molding, CNC machining, and die-casting.
- Experience with quality control and first article inspection processes, including the use of CMM and other measuring instruments.
- A successful track record of taking products from the design phase to market.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Professional background in electromechanical systems, such as mechatronics or electric vehicle development.
- Experience working within the outdoor industry, such as with skateboards, snowboards, or bicycles.
