Xero provides a beautiful, intuitive platform designed to help small businesses and their accounting advisors grow and succeed. Our core purpose is to improve the lives of those in the small business community by providing better tools, information, and connections. We are looking for a talented Director of Engineering to join us on a full-time basis to bootstrap and oversee our new Syndication team. In this executive-level role, you will drive the strategy and execution for a key initiative, developing a deep understanding of our product experiences while building out future partnerships. You will work in a hybrid capacity within the United States, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to balance feature velocity with long-term platform scalability.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, architecture, and delivery of our most complex and ambiguous engineering challenges, ensuring that systems across our organization are aligned with a coherent technical vision.
- Influence productivity and effectiveness across multiple teams, acting as a technical authority who is frequently consulted for difficult trade-off decisions and high-level business impact assessments.
- Actively manage Senior and Principal engineers while identifying future skill needs, scouting top talent, and institutionalizing engineering best practices across the organization.
Requirements
- At least 20 years of professional software development experience.
- A minimum of 15 years of programming experience using modern languages such as Java or C++.
- Over 15 years of experience contributing to system architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling.
- An advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience shipping large-scale consumer products and partnering with machine learning experts to drive system optimizations.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience as a Technical Lead Manager overseeing multiple engineering functions or projects.
