Director of Engineering, Product Foundations at VRChat

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Product Foundations team and shape the technical backbone of the VRChat platform. As a pioneer in social VR, we empower our community to create and explore over 250,000 unique worlds, and we are backed by $100M in funding from investors like Makers Fund and HTC to help us build the future of the metaverse.

Responsibilities

• Take full ownership of our core platform technology, working alongside product, design, and engineering leaders to support company-wide goals.
• Lead, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team of approximately 15 engineers focused on DevOps, security, API development, and release management.
• Define both short and long-term technical strategies that align with our broader vision for the platform.
• Manage a collaborative planning process that balances strategic objectives with user insights and historical data.
• Make high-level technical tradeoffs to ensure the long-term health and scalability of our infrastructure.
• Partner with production teams to execute on roadmaps and resolve roadblocks effectively.
• Represent engineering progress to executive leadership and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Stay at the forefront of industry trends in gaming, user-generated content, and social platforms to drive innovation.

Must-haves

• At least 5 years of experience in engineering management within a high-growth technology company.
• A strong technical background paired with experience in technical product management.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, which are essential for success in our fully remote environment.
• A university degree or equivalent professional experience in a technical field.
• Proven ability to define success metrics and make data-driven strategic decisions.
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and thriving in a fast-paced, evolving industry.
• Fluency in English.

Nice-to-haves

• Hands-on technical experience with release engineering, security, DevOps, APIs, and 3D gaming development.
• Prior expertise working with virtual economies, e-commerce, or social platforms.
