Director of Engineering, Product Foundations at VRChat

What is this role?

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our Product Foundations team. This is a critical, full-time leadership position that operates entirely remotely. You will be responsible for the horizontal technical foundations that power the entire VRChat experience, including our DevOps, release engineering, security, and core technologies like real-time networking and avatar loading. This role reports directly to our VP of Engineering and involves close collaboration with cross-functional leaders and our executive team.

What will you do?

• Lead, inspire, and manage a high-performing team of approximately 15 engineers across diverse disciplines such as security, API development, DevOps, and release management.
• Define and execute both short and long-term technical strategies, ensuring our platform remains healthy, scalable, and aligned with our broader company goals.
• Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to manage the execution process, make critical technical tradeoffs, and ensure we are consistently delivering high-quality software to our community.

What makes you a great fit?

To succeed in this role, you should have a strong technical background and a proven track record in engineering leadership. We are looking for the following qualities:

• At least 5 years of experience in engineering management within a high-growth technology environment.
• A solid grasp of technical product management, with a focus on using data and metrics to drive strategic decisions.
• Exceptional communication skills, which are essential for thriving in our fully remote, distributed culture.
• Experience or familiarity with DevOps, security, API architecture, and 3D gaming development is highly valued.
• A university degree or equivalent professional experience, combined with an intellectual curiosity for emerging technologies and social trends.
• Fluency in English.
