At VEIR, we are working to provide the world with access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy by expanding global electricity transmission networks. We are currently developing a new generation of transmission lines based on High Temperature Superconductor technology, which allows for long-distance, low-loss power transfer within much smaller right-of-ways. By addressing the primary barriers to transmission expansion, our innovations help deliver the most cost-effective renewable power available. We are looking for a Data Scientist-Power Systems Lead to join our team in a full-time capacity to help us identify strategic growth opportunities and execute our daily business objectives.
Key outcomes
- Develop and maintain a suite of analytical tools and models that support our strategic growth, commercial project pipeline, and product development efforts.
- Create innovative analytical approaches to gather market intelligence and identify optimal locations for deploying our transmission line solutions.
- Perform detailed studies to understand how our technology integrates with existing power system infrastructure.
- Collaborate with our transmission line design engineers to propose specific project options that meet customer needs.
- Work alongside our strategy, commercial, regulatory, and product development teams to validate model inputs and refine our data sources.
- Contribute to our mission of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by unlocking necessary transmission capacity.
- Within the first three months, gain a comprehensive understanding of our product development and strategic goals, moving toward becoming a primary contributor to our analytical software and dashboards within your first year.
Requirements
- A degree in electrical or power systems engineering, environmental science, technology policy, economics, or a related field.
- Proven experience using power flow analysis tools and capacity expansion models like ReEDS.
- Strong proficiency in Python and experience managing large, structured databases.
- Demonstrated expertise in geospatial analysis and techno-economic optimization.
- A background working in a startup environment, product development, or energy consulting.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical goals and risks to both internal teams and external partners.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- An MS or PhD in a relevant field such as electrical engineering, economics, or technology policy.
- Experience with a variety of programming languages and tools, including front-end technologies like React or Mapbox, and back-end tools such as R, Julia, or MATLAB.
- Advanced knowledge of geospatial back-end tools, including GeoPandas and spatial indexing.
- Two or more years of experience in an early-stage technology startup or energy consulting role.
- A strong desire to master the engineering and regulatory factors that influence transmission investment decisions.
Compensation
We offer a hybrid work environment to support our team members.
