At the Wikimedia Foundation, we believe in a world where every human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. As the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects, we work to build software that helps people read, contribute, and share information globally. Our mission is powered by a dedicated team that supports volunteer communities and advocates for open knowledge. We are looking for a Data Science Manager to lead our Product Analytics team, helping us turn quantitative insights into strategies that make knowledge accessible to everyone.
The opportunity
In this role, you will lead a team of roughly seven data scientists who serve as the backbone for our product development efforts. You will report to the Senior Director of Research and Decision Science, acting as a bridge between data and strategy. Your team’s work directly informs how we understand our global audience, evaluate the success of new features, and guide the future of our platforms. You will be responsible for ensuring that our data is accurate and that our insights are presented in a way that empowers product managers, engineers, and designers to make informed, impactful decisions.
A day in the life
- You will manage and mentor a talented team of data scientists, fostering an inclusive environment that prioritizes professional growth, critical thinking, and high-quality technical output.
- You will collaborate with product teams and the Data Engineering group to build and maintain data products, ensuring that our metrics and visualizations are accessible and easy for stakeholders to interpret.
- You will oversee the delivery of quantitative insights, balancing the need for rigorous experimental design with the fast-paced requirements of our product development cycle.
Who you are
You are an experienced leader with a strong background in data science and people management. You have a deep understanding of experimental design and statistics, specifically when applied to large-scale user experience data. You are comfortable working with data processing and storage tools like Hadoop, Hive, Presto, and Spark. Beyond your technical expertise, you are a skilled communicator who excels at data storytelling and building strong partnerships across diverse teams. You are committed to equity and inclusion, and you approach management with empathy, humility, and a focus on empowering those around you. You must be located within the UTC+1 to UTC-8 time zones and be available for synchronous work between 14:00 and 22:00 UTC.
