At Zoox we are building the first ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the complete ecosystem needed to bring this technology to market. Our work sits at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, and design, and we are looking for creative minds who want to shape the next generation of urban mobility-as-a-service.
What is this role?
This is a twelve-week, on-site internship for students currently pursuing an advanced degree. You will join our Experience Design team in the Bay Area, California, and help turn early-stage ideas into working passenger experiences inside our autonomous vehicles.
What will you do?
- Build multimodal passenger experiences at every level of fidelity, from quick concept sketches to high-fidelity interactive prototypes, using tools such as Figma, ProtoPie, and Unity.
- Run usability studies that measure perceived safety, trust, and ease of use, then share findings with designers, engineers, and operations teams.
- Document technical specifications and design intent, present concepts to stakeholders, and refine solutions based on their feedback.
What makes you a great fit?
You are enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in Design Engineering, Mechatronics, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field and are in good academic standing. You already have at least one industry internship, co-op, or substantial hands-on project under your belt, and you can relocate to the Bay Area for the summer. Your portfolio shows clear examples of prototyping and design work.
You bring practical experience with Python, C++, JavaScript or TypeScript, and modern web frameworks such as React or Vue.js. You are comfortable with CAD tools like SolidWorks or CATIA, understand fabrication methods including 3D printing and laser cutting, and have worked with microcontrollers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Strong communication skills in English help you explain technical trade-offs to both design and engineering colleagues.
What's in it for you?
The monthly salary range for this position is $5,500 to $8,500, with compensation varying by location and education level. You will also receive medical insurance, and relocation assistance or a housing stipend may be offered based on eligibility.
