OXMAN is a hybrid design and research organization that operates at the intersection of biology, technology, and design. We are dedicated to creating multi-scale products and environments that move beyond human-centric models toward a nature-centric approach. By fostering a radical synergy between human-made constructs and nature-grown systems, we seek to heal the rift between humanity and the natural world. We are currently searching for a Senior Computational Design Engineer to join our interdisciplinary team of thinkers and makers in the United States. In this role, you will use mathematics and computation to mediate between physical, digital, and biological elements, developing tools that bridge the gap between abstract design and industrial fabrication.
Key outcomes
- Develop sophisticated computational design processes and optimization tools that interface directly with industrial machinery and custom prototypes.
- Execute simulations focused on machine motion and material behavior prediction.
- Create prototypes, models, and pre-visualizations to guide internal decision-making and conceptual development.
- Conduct applied research in computational geometry, intelligence, and dynamics to support specific projects and broader platform technologies.
- Implement novel computational methods to generate 3D models, fabrication descriptions, and software scripts.
- Produce high-quality 3D renderings and illustrations to communicate research and design concepts to our team, clients, and the public.
- Collaborate effectively with a diverse team of engineers, biologists, and designers while maintaining clear communication regarding project progress.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of professional software development experience with a specific focus on geometry and design.
- Expertise in interfacing methods for robotics, industrial machinery, non-planar 3D printing, and slicers.
- A portfolio or website that showcases creative problem-solving and a strong aesthetic sensibility.
- Mastery of industry-standard digital design tools, specifically SideFX Houdini and Rhino or Grasshopper.
- Proven programming proficiency in Python or C++23, including experience with relevant libraries such as libigl, fenics, or pytorch.
- A solid foundation in university-level linear algebra and multivariable calculus.
- A deep understanding of artistic fundamentals, including composition, form, and color.
- Research experience within fields such as computational fabrication, geometry, or dynamics.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to maintaining positive, ethical working relationships across disciplines.
Preferred qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency in real-time development tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or Touch Designer.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $225,000, with final placement determined by your specific skills, experience, and organizational requirements. Our comprehensive compensation package also features variable year-end bonuses, equity participation, and immigration assistance.
How to apply
We invite you to join our mission to redefine the relationship between design and the natural world. Please submit your application, including your portfolio, to be considered for this role. We look forward to reviewing your work and discussing how your technical and aesthetic rigor can contribute to our team.
