We are seeking a Chief Security Officer to join the Democratic National Committee. This is a role of significant importance, as you will be responsible for developing and implementing our cybersecurity strategy and shaping the security posture of the entire Democratic Party. You will report directly to our Chief Technology Officer, with additional reporting lines to the Executive Director and the DNC Chair. Because we are a small organization with national influence, we need a leader who is comfortable balancing high-level strategic planning with hands-on technical contributions. This is a long-term, foundational position rather than a temporary election-cycle role, and you will work closely with our Engineering, Product, Data, and Operations teams to ensure our security program is integrated across the entire organization.
Key outcomes
- Develop and oversee the organization's security architecture, vision, and roadmap while ensuring alignment with our broader technology goals.
- Lead day-to-day security operations, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response planning.
- Manage our internal security team, including recruiting talent and fostering professional development.
- Implement governance and compliance standards to ensure our programs meet industry best practices.
- Drive pragmatic process improvements that enhance operational efficiency across the DNC.
- Collaborate with internal counsel to maintain strong relationships with law enforcement agencies like the FBI and DHS.
- Serve as a public-facing representative of the DNC, working with state parties, external partners, and the media to communicate our security story.
- Manage security projects that span multiple departments, including Legal, HR, and IT.
Requirements
We are looking for a subject matter expert in information security who possesses the following qualifications:
- Significant experience leading through security incidents, including coordination with executive leadership and outside counsel.
- A proven track record of helping organizations refine their workflows to adopt a secure by default strategy.
- Experience building and maintaining a comprehensive information security program using established frameworks.
- Familiarity with navigating data privacy regulations and managing technical or process debt.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise and production systems such as AWS, GCP, Okta, and G Suite.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex security concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience managing diverse, values-driven teams.
- The ability to assess threats and risks from both a business and technical perspective to champion efficient security solutions.
- Due to federal campaign finance regulations, you must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. green card holder to be eligible for this position.
Preferred qualifications
- A background in securing data and technology organizations at various scales, ranging from small startups to large, well-resourced entities.
- Demonstrated success in influencing executive decision-making among business and technology leaders.
- An active security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Prior experience working directly with government entities or law enforcement.
Compensation
The starting salary for this full-time position is $205,000 on an annualized basis. We offer a hybrid work environment. Please note that this is an exempt role that may require work on weekends.
How to apply
If you are interested in leading our long-term security initiatives and contributing to the mission of the DNC, we invite you to submit your application for consideration. We look forward to reviewing your experience and discussing how your background aligns with our goals.
