Lindblad Expeditions is a true pioneer in the world of expedition travel. Since our early days taking explorers to Antarctica in 1966 and opening the Galapagos to tourism, we have remained committed to the exhilaration of discovery. Today, we operate a fleet of 20 ships that carry nearly 30,000 guests annually to the most remote and pristine corners of the globe. We believe that our strength lies in our diverse community, and we are looking for dedicated professionals to help us continue delivering remarkable experiences while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship.
About the Role
We are seeking a Chief Engineer to join our team on a full-time basis. This is a senior-level position responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems, including hotel equipment. You will work a rotational schedule of approximately six weeks on and six weeks off, with 12-hour workdays. In this role, you will collaborate closely with and supervise the Assistant Engineer to ensure our ships remain in a constant state of readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain essential ship systems, including propulsion, electrical generation and distribution, HVAC, refrigeration, and water treatment programs.
- Oversee all bunkering and waste discharge operations to ensure strict adherence to safety and environmental compliance standards.
- Directly supervise the Engine Mechanic, assign tasks to the engineering team, and conduct performance evaluations while providing ongoing training for new and relief staff.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should possess a strong technical background and a commitment to maritime safety. We prefer candidates who are graduates of a maritime engineering school or hold a Designated Duty License, along with at least two years of experience as an engineer on 100-ton vessels. You must have deep expertise in diesel propulsion, electrical systems, and various support systems like hydraulics and pneumatics. Proficiency with computer software in a Windows environment is essential, as is the ability to interpret technical drawings. You must be a self-starter who thrives under pressure and can handle multiple priorities with sound judgment. Additionally, you will need to hold or be able to obtain several certifications, including an EPA Section 608 Technician Type 1 license, STCW safety training, a valid TWIC card, and a valid US passport.
Location
This position is based in the United States.

- A 401(k) plan with an employer match.
- Vacation pay calculated at 10% of your daily rate for each day worked.
