Airbnb began in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests into their home. Since then, we have grown into a global community where over 5 million hosts have facilitated more than 2 billion guest arrivals. We are dedicated to helping people connect with communities in authentic ways through unique stays and experiences. Our On Trip and Wishlist teams are currently looking for a talented engineer to help us build a seamless journey for our guests from the moment they start planning until their trip concludes.
About the Role
We are seeking a Backend Staff Software Engineer to join us in a full-time capacity. In this role, you will work within a cross-disciplinary team that includes experts in iOS, Android, Web, and backend development. You will collaborate closely with partners in design, product, data science, and marketing to build and maintain the features that define the Airbnb experience, including our Wishlists, the Trips tab, and our connected smart lock solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Explore, define, and build new product experiences alongside our design and product teams, taking ideas from initial concepts to large-scale implementation.
- Develop prototypes to validate new features while maintaining a focus on long-term technical architecture and system design.
- Translate these prototypes into high-quality, scalable, and maintainable production code while fostering a culture of operational excellence and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
- At least 9 years of hands-on experience in backend software engineering.
- A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- Extensive proficiency in Java or Kotlin.
- Proven experience working with microservice architectures at scale.
- A strong passion for technical quality, system efficiency, and user experience sensibilities.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, specifically regarding code reviews and architecture discussions.
Location
This position is remote-eligible within the United States. You must reside in a state where Airbnb maintains a registered entity. While this is a remote role, you may occasionally be asked to work from an Airbnb office or attend offsite meetings.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary range for this position is $204,000 to $255,000 USD. Actual pay is determined by factors such as your specific experience, transferable skills, and current business needs. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for bonuses, equity, company benefits, and Employee Travel Credits. We also provide the flexibility of remote work.
