At SPAN, we are dedicated to electrifying our built environment to help decarbonize the world and address the challenges of climate change. Our mission centers on replacing fossil fuel appliances with clean, electric alternatives, creating resilient homes, and designing a more flexible electrical grid. We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis in the United States. You will play a vital role in building the cloud infrastructure that connects our users to the data and controls within the SPAN ecosystem, including our panels and charging products.
Key outcomes
- Design and implement new features and subsystems within the SPAN Cloud to serve homeowners, installers, and utility partners.
- Collaborate with product and design teams to identify customer needs and translate them into functional, high-quality features.
- Work alongside firmware, frontend, and backend engineers to ensure our hardware and software products function as a cohesive system.
- Develop robust APIs and data specifications using Kotlin and TypeScript, while managing communication with IoT devices through gRPC and other protocols.
- Architect full-stack solutions that support advanced functionality, such as geolocation-specific demand reduction and third-party hardware integrations.
- Scale our cloud and data infrastructure to accommodate our rapidly growing fleet of devices.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience in backend engineering, with a proven ability to take ownership of complex projects.
- Strong proficiency in a common backend programming language and a desire to work with Kotlin, TypeScript, and Python.
- Experience working with cloud-native platforms, specifically AWS.
- A deep understanding of engineering principles required to build scalable, resilient, and robust systems.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with engineers across multiple domains.
- Experience working within shared codebases, utilizing industry-standard tools for testing, linting, and type management.
Preferred qualifications
- Practical experience with IoT products or hardware-integrated software.
- Familiarity with container-based deployments and AWS infrastructure services.
- Experience working with various data storage solutions, including SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Proficiency in designing and maintaining GraphQL APIs or gRPC services.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or Pulumi.
- Background in developing products that feature rich mobile applications.
Compensation
The base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $175,000. Individual compensation is determined based on your specific location, skills, and experience. In addition to the salary, we offer the following benefits:
