Backend Engineer at SumUp

The opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team and help shape the future of our financial products. In this role, you will be at the heart of our technical operations, focusing on optimizing transaction performance, designing scalable architectures, and ensuring our systems remain robust and secure. You will work within a global context, collaborating with colleagues across Europe, the US, and Latin America to deliver value to millions of users. We believe in choosing the right tool for the job, so you will have a voice in selecting the technologies we use to build our next generation of services.

A day in the life

• You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, including designers, product managers, and DevOps engineers, to prototype solutions and ensure our backend services are deployed smoothly.
• You will spend time writing clean, testable code and providing comprehensive documentation, while actively participating in code reviews and pair programming sessions to maintain high quality standards.
• You will contribute to product discussions and take ownership of backend decisions, helping the team navigate complex architectural challenges and implement best practices.

Who you are

You are a seasoned engineer with a deep passion for Golang and a strong background in software architecture. You understand how to design both RESTful and event-driven services, and you feel right at home working with both SQL and NoSQL databases. You are a natural mentor who enjoys sharing knowledge and helping your teammates grow. We value your ability to solve problems and your commitment to writing code that is easy for the rest of the team to maintain and improve. While not required, experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, and the fintech industry will certainly help you hit the ground running.
