Backend Engineer at Relayfi

Relay is an all-in-one money management platform designed to help small businesses succeed by moving beyond the limitations of traditional banking. We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join our team in Canada to help build robust, human-centric financial tools that protect our customers and support their growth.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement reliable, maintainable solutions to address complex technical challenges within our risk infrastructure.
• Develop new tools for transaction monitoring, application verification, and third-party service integrations.
• Enhance our existing risk management capabilities by integrating internal and external tools to meet our loss prevention goals.
• Create and deploy risk strategies, including custom heuristics and rules to mitigate potential fraud.
• Partner with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Marketing, and Risk, to ensure security and risk considerations are embedded in our product development.
• Proactively improve our codebases and establish engineering best practices across the team.

Must-haves

• At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally with a background in fraud prevention or payment risk.
• Proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, with the ability to make pragmatic architectural decisions.
• Working knowledge of AWS services such as DynamoDB, Lambda, Kinesis, SQS, and SNS.
• Experience with React and its ecosystem for maintaining internal UI tools.
• A strong interest in event-based system architecture.
• A collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively alongside multiple stakeholders.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in the fast-paced, evolving environment of a startup.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with fraud prevention vendors like Sift, Plaid, Socure, Sardine, SEON, Finicity, Castle, or Unit21.
• Experience working with streaming technologies such as Kafka or Kinesis.
