Backend Engineer at Tailscale

What is this role?

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team on a full-time basis. This is a remote position, meaning you can work from anywhere. You will play a vital role in our engineering organization, helping us develop our product while taking ownership of the entire lifecycle of our services. We value individuals who are self-motivated and comfortable working within an asynchronous, early-stage startup environment.

What will you do?

• Design, build, test, and document core software components as part of our collaborative engineering team.
• Develop essential product features, including our control plane, relay infrastructure, and various identity integrations.
• Maintain the stability and efficiency of our systems by participating in incident response, building for observability, and addressing customer support escalations.

• Proven experience working with distributed systems.
• Practical knowledge of SQL databases.
• Familiarity with networking concepts, such as routing and IP addressing.
• Experience with authentication and authorization frameworks like OAuth2, OIDC, SSO, and SAML.
• Proficiency in Go, as it is the primary language used for our backend development.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback while working independently.
• A security-first mindset and the flexibility to adapt to the fast-paced nature of a startup.
