Picture a small but fast-moving team of engineers, data scientists, and climate specialists who spend their days turning complex sustainability data into clear, trustworthy evidence. At SustainCERT we build the systems that let organizations prove the real-world impact of their climate projects, and we are looking for someone who wants their code to serve that mission every single day.
The opportunity
As our next Backend Engineer you will join the Universal Verification & Validation squad inside our Technology & Data group. The squad owns a multi-standard platform that validates and verifies carbon credits, giving investors and project developers the confidence that every credit represents genuine emission reductions. Your work will sit at the heart of that platform, shaping how data flows, how services talk to one another, and how the entire product scales as demand grows. You will report to the Director of Software Engineering and help steer technical decisions that directly support our goal of making climate action measurable and credible.
A day in the life
- You start by reviewing pull requests and pairing with a teammate on a new GraphQL endpoint that lets the front-end surface verification results in real time.
- Mid-morning you investigate a performance spike in an Azure Function, trace it to an Entity Framework query, and refactor the code so nightly batch jobs finish minutes instead of hours.
- After lunch you join a short workshop with data scientists to design a shared data model that will let their models feed directly into the verification engine without brittle CSV exports.
Who you are
You bring at least three years of hands-on experience building production systems with .NET and C#. You are comfortable designing normalized schemas, writing migration scripts, and tuning queries so they stay fast as tables grow. You know the full software-development lifecycle-from gathering requirements to monitoring live services-and you treat clean, testable code as a baseline rather than a stretch goal. Because our platform is evolving quickly, you already have solid experience with RESTful APIs and feel ready to extend or adopt GraphQL. Any previous work with Azure services such as Azure SQL, Azure Functions, or Azure Event Hubs is a welcome plus, as is prior exposure to scientific or environmental data sets. You communicate clearly in English, enjoy explaining trade-offs to both engineers and non-technical colleagues, and you value an environment where questions are welcomed and psychological safety is real.
Why you'll love it here
You will work entirely remotely, with the option to meet up in person if you are based in Luxembourg or the Netherlands. We keep meetings focused so you have long stretches of maker time, and we invest in the tools you need to stay productive from wherever you are. Beyond the technical mission, you will be part of a friendly, international group that genuinely believes rigorous data can change the trajectory of the planet. If you want your next backend role to combine meaningful impact with modern cloud tooling, we would love to hear from you.
