The role
We are looking for a Senior Automated Chemistry Technologist to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis in Rockville, MD. In this role, you will support the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) by integrating cutting-edge technology into medicinal chemistry laboratories. This position is ideal for an experienced chemist who is eager to bridge the gap between traditional bench work and modern, automated workflows.
Core responsibilities
- Design, execute, and troubleshoot chemical reaction conditions and purification processes to ensure reproducibility and practical application in a laboratory setting.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate complex laboratory instrumentation, including robotic systems and liquid handlers, while managing chemical inventories and test solutions.
- Produce detailed research reports, conduct literature reviews, and coordinate project progress with external collaborators to support the vision of the NCATS ASPIRE team.
Skills and experience
To be successful in this role, you should possess a strong foundation in organic chemistry and a desire to innovate within the laboratory environment. We require the following qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry combined with 3 to 4 years of industrial experience.
- Proven expertise in organic chemical synthesis, including the ability to independently perform and analyze data from TLC, HPLC, and NMR.
- Familiarity with advanced laboratory workstations, programmatically controlled instrumentation, and software such as ChemDraw, Microsoft Office, and chemical search engines like SciFinder or Reaxys.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills to effectively document findings and collaborate with a diverse team.
